Kimya Dawson

Hailed by the likes of Rolling Stone, NPR, Blender and Pitchfork, as a seriously talented wordsmith, Kimya Dawson rose to prominence as the female half of the band The Moldy Peaches, leading proponents of the anti-folk movement in New York City during the early part of the decade. Since the Moldy Peaches went on hiatus in 2004, Dawson has gone on to release a series of homemade albums, and has toured widely in North America and Europe. In Septmber, 2008, Dawson released a new studio solo album, Alphabutt, a collection of children's music made in collaboration with Third Eye Blind guitarist Kevin Cadogan, and a number of Dawson's other musical friends and their children. Dawson has also contributed songs to the films "The Guatemalan Handshake" and "Glue", and was featured prominently on the chart-topping soundtrack to the film "Juno", which included six of her solo songs and one from The Moldy Peaches. Dawson has also collaborated with a number of other notable artists, appearing in songs by Ben Kweller, They Might Be Giants, The Mountain Goats and Regina Spektor. As an extension of her recordings for children, Dawson has been actively involved in creating an online community for kids who have suffered abuse, depression and poor self-esteem, and her songs have become important sources of inspiration and emotional support for this special group of fans.
